Brooke Bowman, a safety patrol captain and fifth-grader from Clover Park School District’s Evergreen Elementary School on Fort Lewis, was inducted into the AAA Washington Safety Patrol Hall of Fame. Bowman, 11, is the daughter of Sgt. 1st Class Mark and Jennifer Bowman. She is one of 10 hall of fame winners across the state and was nominated for the award by Dawnise Johnson, safety patrol advisor and paraeducator.
“Brooke is a wonderful advocate and role model for Evergreen students,” said Johnson. “She has boundless energy and a strong commitment to safety and community service. Her organizational skills, leadership and dedication make her very deserving of this honor.”
Bowman will be honored along with other hall of fame recipients at the May 1 Mariners game against the Oakland Athletics.
“I enjoy helping younger kids at my school and making sure they are safe,” said Bowman. “Contributing my time and talents to help others is very important to me.”
In addition to her role as safety patrol captain, Bowman is a “wheelchair driver” and helps fellow students navigate the school’s busy hallways and playground. Evergreen has a unique population of special needs students because of its proximity to Madigan Army Medical Center. To qualify as a driver, Bowman had to take a written test and a driving test—just like a real driver’s license. She is also an avid ice skater and practices every morning before she comes to school.
“Brooke is so organized that she developed and presented a contingency plan in case she was ever late for her safety patrol duty—it’s been two years and she’s never missed a day, but that plan is in place,” said Johnson.
Evergreen’s safety patrol program emphasizes leadership and responsibility. Four teams of 12 students make up the safety patrol team and are recommended for the position by their teachers. According to Johnson, there is a waiting list to join the patrol, because students know what an honor it is.
Each year AAA Washington selects 10 outstanding school safety patrollers from schools throughout the state to receive the honor of being inducted into the AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame. Bowman is Evergreen’s third hall of fame inductee.
