The Suburban Times continues its support of future journalists by publishing four of their articles from the soon-to-be-published April 1 issue of the Hook, the Pioneer Middle School’s newspaper.
Student reporters in Kristina Sullivan’s Skills Class at Pioneer learn the basics of news reporting during the quarter, and then eagerly await seeing their story “in print”. The Hook began publication in 2008 and continues through the present, as a way to keep parents and students in the know about what’s happening at their School.

On, Feb. 9th, Pioneer Middle School’s Newspaper skills class had the privilege of meeting a real magazine publisher. Ben Sclair writes and reports for his own magazine called GA News which stands for “General Aviation News.” He also publishes an online newspaper called The Suburban Times.
Sclair grew up around airplanes so it is not surprising that he had chosen a career that has to do with aviation. During his childhood, Sclair helped out with his family’s newspaper; he was raised in the publishing world.
The Suburban Times has been published for almost 3-1/2 years. It includes articles by Sclair, his wife, and other contributors who are interested in the community. When writing news and opinion articles, Ben says either way, “You’ve got to get the facts straight.” Whether writing about airplanes or the community, The Suburban Times is a big part of his job.
As technology’s popularity gets greater, the newspaper gets read in electronic form more and more often.
Mr. Sclair advises students to write about what they have a passion for. He loves airplanes so he has a magazine dedicated to airplanes, his passion. If you have a strong interest, Sclair recommends creating your own on-line journal. Students can also submit articles to the Suburban Times at www.thesubtimes.com.
