Three Steilacoom High School marketing students earned spots at the upcoming International Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Competition set for next month.
Justin Fulbright (junior), Zachery Esseln (sophomore) and Matt Roberts (senior) will travel to Anaheim, CA from April 28-May 3 for the event.
The trio is among a group of 71 SHS marketing students who competed for 16 spots in two different role-play events at the State DECA Competition held in early March in Bellevue, WA. Besides taking a written test, contestants performed role-plays before judges from the business community. “Justin was in the top Six, which qualified him to compete at the International Competition,” said Steve Brown, SHS Marketing teacher.
Fulbright, only the second SHS student to qualify from this school, will compete in the Restaurant and Food Service Management event.
Esseln will be a delegate to the Leadership Academy, while Roberts has applied to attend the Senior Management Institute.
“It’s very tough to get a spot in this event,” Brown said.
“I’m really encouraged about the state event since all students competed at this level and received multiple awards,” he added.
“All levels of performance from SHS Marketing students improved dramatically from the prior year,” Brown said.
Note: 149SHS students are enrolled in marketing courses, including work-based learning students.
An end-of-the year activity for the students is the upcoming Pro-Sports Day, sponsored by DECA and the Seattle Mariners. Besides an opportunity to go behind the scenes at SAFECO Field, students also will visit a Seattle-area business.
The final event of the year, Brown said, was a Putt-Putt Golf Tournament, set for the first part of June at Parkland Putters.
