Jack Asby, a longtime Lakewood resident and community supporter, died earlier this month in Iowa City, Iowa, where he had lived for several years with his daughter.
Asby was an administrator at Fort Steilacoom Community College (now Pierce College) for a number of years before being appointed to serve as president. In addition to his professional endeavors, he was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Clover Park serving as president in 1986-87; a Lakewood Fire Department commissioner, active participant in Lakewood Chamber of Commerce plus a host of other organizations and activities. After retiring from the college, Asby worked part-time as a public relations representative for Gene Pankey Motors, was a member of the Air Force Association and served a term as its president, board member of Crime Stoppers and had a role at Western State Hospital, too.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ilon. He met and married Ilon when they were both serving in the US Navy during WWII.
Prior to moving to Iowa as his health deteriorated, Asby made his home for a number of years at the Franke Tobey Jones Continuing Care Retirement Community in Tacoma.
