SHS Senior Olivia Larson placed as First Alternate (B) in the Mezzo-Soprano category in the 2009 Mountain Region Choral Competition. The competition was held March 14 at Pioneer Middle School at DuPont/Northwest Landing.
Top competition winners included vocalists from Curtis Spanaway Lake and Graham-Kapowsin High Schools. Almost 300 vocalists took part in the yearly event that also included students from Spanaway, Bethel, Clover Park, University Place and Franklin-Pierce schools.
Categories included Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass, Men’s and Women’s Small and Large Vocal groups, and mixed vocal groups. Two Mezzos and four Alternates advanced to State, said Joe Lindquist, choral director at Pioneer Middle School. He and SHS choral director Rachael Welde were coordinators of the weekend event.
The state choral competition will be held on April 24-25 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
“Students were required to sing ‘art songs’ and ‘master works’ of vocal literature (classical music) rather than pop, jazz, rock, rap, etc.,” Lindquist explained.
Competitions were held in the school’s Choir and Band rooms as well as in other classrooms at the newly opened school. Student volunteers helped with the set-up and take-down of rooms, Lindquist continued. Ten pianos were used that day, he added.
Approximately 700 people passed through Pioneer that day, estimated Antwone Brown, head of maintenance at Pioneer.
“A big ‘Thanks’ to Pioneer’s administration for allowing us to use the building,” Lindquist said.
“And a big ‘thanks’ to Steilacoom Historical School District for supporting us in hosting this event.”
“Thanks also to the many student and adults volunteers and to the community for allowing so many people from many places descend upon our school.”
Note: SHSD choirs from the high and middle school will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26 at Lagerquist Hall at Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland. Doors open at 6:40 p.m.
