Lakewood, WA — The Lakewood Fire Department participated in this year‚Äôs Read Across America event on Monday, March 2nd. Lakewood elementary schools that participated were visited by firefighters who read to the students.
Read Across America began in 1997 with the idea to celebrate reading, in honor of Dr. Suess’ birthday. In 1998, the program began and has been encouraging children and adults to read together ever since.
Last year, five schools in Lakewood participated and firefighters visited each one. This year, eight schools participated and more than 800 students were read books mostly by Dr. Suess or concerning fire safety. Participating schools included Idewild Elementary, Tillicum Elementary, Lakeview Hope Academy, Park Lodge Elementary, Dower Elementary, St. Frances Cabrini School, and Lake Louise Elementary. In DuPont, Chloe Clark Elementary was visited by firefighters as students lined the halls reading.
Students listened to stories read to them, which the National Education Association says research shows that children who read outside of school do better inside school.
The Lakewood Fire Department would like to thank those schools who participated and for the opportunity to join their efforts in increasing a child’s education.
