Charles Wright Academy in University Place will celebrate the life of the school‚Äôs founder, Sam Brown (1918-2009), on Sunday, March 8, at 2pm in the school‚Äôs Tarrier Dome at 7723 Chambers Creek Road West.
Speakers will include CWA Headmaster Rob Camner, Board Chair Brian Duchin, Chaplain Mike Moffitt, Sam‚Äôs son Henry Brown and several teachers, alums and students. The event will include performances by the school‚Äôs fourth and fifth grade choir, the choir of St. Mary‚Äôs Episcopal Church, and a closing bagpipe solo by Chuck Zittel ‚Äô75.
Brown and his late wife, Nathalie, were very active in the Lakewood and Tacoma community. The couple founded CWA 51 years ago and served as lifetime trustees. During the 2008-2009 school year, Sam was frequently on campus for board meetings and events. He celebrated his 90th birthday during the school’s September Headmaster’s Picnic by making an appearance at the Lower School’s Town Hall that day and joining the Upper School choir singing the National Anthem before the football game. Flags on campus were lowered following his death in January and students quickly formed a memorial Facebook page.
