Ian Spake worked as a page for Sen. Mike Carrell and others this week in Olympia.
Ian Spake, a junior at Steilacoom High School, took time away from his studies to participate in the Senate Page Program during the seventh week of the 2009 Legislative Session. He was sponsored by Sen. Carrell (R–Lakewood).
After hearing about the page program from his sister, who enjoyed participating in the past, Spake was excited to apply. “I heard that paging is fun, and that it looks good on a resume,” he said. Highlights of his week in Olympia included working in the Senate Chamber and meeting Carrell, who he found to be amiable and entertaining.
Spake recommends the page program to other students and cautions them to be ready for plenty of walking. “Wear thick socks and nice shoes,” he said. “Have fun, but don’t mess around too much.”
When he gets a break from school, Spake enjoys playing soccer and working on his car. After high school he plans on going to technical college and then working as a mechanic. Spake is the son of Christine and Tom Spake of Lakewood.
Junior high and high school students should visit the Senate Page Program website.
