Steilacoom Historical School District #1’s Superintendent, Dr. Art Himmler, was honored this past week as one of the country’s Top Ten Tech-Savvy Superintendents of the Year. The Award was presented on Feb. 20 as part of the American Association of School Administrators Conference. The Award Ceremony was held in conjunction with the Century Club’s luncheon and was the ninth year that school superintendents have been so recognized.
“This award,” said Dr. Himmler, “is validation of everything the people in our District have done with regard to technology, and credit is to be properly given to the Technology Staff for their on-going support, to the Administrators and Teachers for researching the technology curriculum items and equipment that they would like to use, and to the citizens of our communities for funding bond efforts to supply this technology to our students. This honor is for our whole District.”
“The continuing challenge,” Dr. Himmler added, “is to refine our instructional tech usage such that we augment student performance by helping them learn easier and faster. Technology is a very powerful educational reform tool which significantly increases students’ learning engagement time, allows for faster assessments of individual students’ needs which link to more timely and targeted intervention strategies, and it permits more interactive parent participation in supporting student efforts.”
Criteria used for selection included: articulating a vision of the efficacy and efficiency of instructional technology, using technology in the day-to-day execution of the superintendency, ensuring that technology resources are equitably distributed among students and staff, providing the professional development to empower staff in implementing the tech instructional strategies, and thinking creatively about long-term challenges and opportunities for tech usage within the school district and in education at large.
