We’ve had two additional comments on the informal survey regarding the Abitibi mill in Steilacoom. To read more comments, click here.
Oh my, this subect is all over the place.
I had recommended buying the Abitibi property years ago. It is perfect for SHS, growth, PARKING and so much more. After all with all the science classes we should be able to use quite a bit as an outdoor classroom (as someone previously mentioned – Great idea). Regretfully, the district needs to do whats right for it, not the tax income of the town.
I think a bus barn in Dupont would be a great idea but not functional either, as kids are going back and forth from Steilacoom and Dupont to much. The football field next to the current bus barn can be flattened and part of the SIZE increase of the current bus barn, and since we own the property already there is no real expense.
New admin building, ahhh give me a break (stop always wanting to spend more of our money)! You could always sell that building and move the admin to the old Pioneer Middle School and remodel the inside, and TEAR down the falling apart wings.
I know…. here is a novel idea hire more teachers, and when there is no room for the teachers (lack of classrooms) do not cry to me, as I also said Pioneer was to small, bad design (limited) and to expensive. Poor planning on the board’s part are not a good reason to take more $$ from our pocket.
Here is another GREAT idea.. How about buying BOOKS for the kids?? My son and the entire 8th grade can not even bring a math book home in Algebra because there are not enough of the OLD books !?!? Great new school, but no educational tools – (oh wait those white boards are GREAT) it’s no wonder they keep failing the WASL and MAPS.
Let’s get back to what the School District is suppose to do.. TEACH
Let’s give our teachers raises and motivate them to be well rounded educators. The teachers make or break the district, not the administration. The administration makes all the money and does the paperwork, but the Educators are the ones that teach our children and prepare them for the future and the tests.
How about home economics classes? How about we go back to teaching kids useful skills? You know cooking, sewing, metal shop, wood shop… Those classes we 40 somethings all took.. you know life skills classes.. We have the classroom at PMS, but it goes unused for its purpose.. I sure am glad someone decided to buy all those ovens instead of new/updated text books for our kids.
I notice a strong weighting in the language of this survey to “sell off the old Pioneer property for redevelopment”. Who wants redevelopment in the heart of historic oldtown…possibly only those who don’t live right here?
Tear down the bus barn, keep the fields and the historic school for public use. Steilacoom does not need another housing development(street of “dreams”), but does need to retain some of its unique, historic integrity.
There’s certainly room for a venue in old Pioneer (something like the ER Rogers resturant) and perhaps music and arts with community activity spaces. I imagine state or federal grants could be acquired to assist. The Steilacoom residents should not let it go!
