I was recently forwarded the article and survey regarding the Abitibi property and the fact that the Steilacoom School District is considering purchasing the property. Please note that no decision has been made. The Steilacoom School Board is studying the feasibility of the property.
The one correction I would like to make is that the property is being considered to increase the real estate foot print of the high school for academic purposes. The 10+ acres, known as the cooling pond area, is immediately adjacent to the high school and if acquired would give the high school an option to expand as their student population increases in the future. This is the main purpose of why we are looking and studying the property.
Should we be required to purchase the entire 80+ acre site, instead of just the cooling pond, I was asked if there were other things we could do with the property. This is when the bus barn and administration offices were mentioned as a possibility. All these things are speculative because the feasibility stage is ongoing and has not been completed.
While I appreciate your interest in the school district, and the assistance that a public survey would provide, I felt obligated to correct the record.
