No injuries were suffered in a suspected arson fire at the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island that broke out shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.
Damage to the single-story wood frame building is estimated at $155,000, along with a loss of $10,000 in personal property.
All 74 residents of the Redwood Building were safely evacuated without incident to the SCC‚Äôs gymnasium where they spent the night. During the evacuation, the SCC was placed on lockdown. There was no threat of any kind to public safety during the incident.
The Deputy Fire Marshall will refer the suspected arson to the Pierce County Sheriff‚Äôs Office for investigation.
The SCC, with a population of 275, is a mental health treatment facility for civilly committed sex offenders.
