Following is an email sent to the alumni network of Charles Wright. You can read headmaster Rob Camner’s reflection on Sam by clicking here.
Dear Friends and Fellow Alums,
It is with a heavy heart that I share sad news.
On Monday evening, Charles Wright’s founder, lifetime trustee and friend passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his home. Just last week, Sam was in our offices, bursting with his usual enthusiasm and discussing the merits of his latest great read — extolling the novelties of its theme and complexities of its characters.
When news of Sam’s passing first hit Charles Wright’s campus, Lower School Head Diane Hunt, wrote to fellow faculty and staff, “I am remembering Sam’s big smile, bushy eyebrows, quick wit, pragmatic spirit, and generous heart. In our mission, we say that we foster self-reliance, integrity, social responsibility, and humor. It’s sort of like saying that we want our kids to grow up to be like Sam Brown.”
Our deepest sympathies extend to the many members of the Brown Family as they, and we, remember with great love and admiration the incomparable Sam Brown.
A memorial service to celebrate Sam’s life is being planned for the afternoon of Sunday, February 22, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the Tarrier Dome. We will keep you posted as details solidify.
Those who knew and loved Sam, remember the hundreds of blessings he has written and shared with us over the decades. It seems only appropriate to end this note in Sam’s words…
“I’m all aglow inside, and hope you are too,” spoke Sam to the 600+ guests at CWA’s 50th birthday party, “so as we bid goodbye for now, may we all just Go With the Glow!”
Peace to you all,
Molly (Wilcox) Pennell ’95

If the family writes an official obituary, I will be sure to pass it along.
