Lakewood, WA — At 2:54 a.m. (Monday, January 19, 2009) the Lakewood Fire Department was called to a report of a house fire at 7122 86th St SW. Engine 24 and Medic 30 were the first on scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure. Firefighters began to fight the fire from the exterior of the structure. They then moved inside and attacked the fire, which was declared under control at approximately 5:19 a.m.
The family was alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm. Lakewood Firefighters had just been to the home two months prior to install smoke alarms. Lakewood Fire District 2 received a grant from the Washington State Department of Health in 2008 to install smoke alarms. This family learned of the program though our Annual Safety Pumpkin Patch Event and set up an appointment to install alarms throughout their home. If you live in Lakewood and are in need of a smoke alarm do not hesitate to call 253-582-4600 to set up an appointment.
The family utilized their escape plan and exited the home to run to a neighbor’s house to call 9-1-1. One cat did perish in the fire. Damages are estimated at $117,000 to the structure and $89,000 in contents. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
