January is School Board Recognition Month in the state of Washington, a recognition that coincides with a nationwide effort to honor and underscore the important role of elected school board members in public education and student achievement.
There are 1,477 school board members in Washington state‚Äôs 295 public school districts, each elected by the citizens of their respective communities. Clover Park School District has five board members‚ÄîDr. Marty Schafer, Connie Coleman-Lacadie, Walt Kellcy Jr., Carole Jacobs and Elli Falk. Collectively, the board has served the district and community for more than 38 years.
For a better understanding of the board and their responsibilities, Lakewood residents are encouraged to attend monthly meetings of the board. The next regular meeting of the board is Monday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. in room 4 of the Student Services Center, 10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW in Lakewood.
