SHSD to host vocal contest

January 7, 2009 By Nancy Covert

By Nancy Covert

The 2009 Mountain Region (West Central District ) 6-12 grade Vocal Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held at Pioneer Middle School this year, according to SHSD choral teacher Rachael Welde.

Coordinating this annual event “is passed from teacher to teacher in the mountain region,” Welde said. Because Lakes High School, which was scheduled to host the event this year, is under construction, Steilacoom High School agreed to host the event.

This involves all the middle schools, junior highs and high schools (such as Steilacoom, Clover Park, Bethel) in the entire region.

It will be a day-long event on Sat., March 14. Nine judges, ranging from middle school teachers to college professors, will take part and adjudicate the vocalists, as they compete to become better singers and potentially be chosen to represent the region at the State contest, scheduled for April.

“This is one of those “it takes a village” kind of operations,” Welde added.

“People who are able to volunteer as door monitor or ushers, should phone Welde at 253-983-2344.

“I could use a ton of help!” she said.

Pioneer Middle School is located at 1750 Bob’s Hollow Road, at Northwest Landing.

The competition begins at 8 a.m.
