Boys & Girls Clubs art on display at TAM

On Thursday, December 18, 2008 the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound Fine Arts Competition and Exhibit participants will have their art featured during a reception at the Tacoma Art Museum from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The art will continue to be on display through January 12th. The competition is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Fine Arts Exhibit which is a year-round fine arts program that encourages artistic expression through classes, special events, and an exhibit at the Tacoma Art Museum. This year, more than 985 Clubs participated providing Club members with the opportunity to see their artwork professionally displayed before family, peers, and the community.

As a participant in the National Fine Arts Exhibit, the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound will submit member’s artwork in four age divisions and 10 categories, including monochromatic drawing, multicolored drawing, pastels, water color, oil or acrylic, print making, mixed media, collage and sculpture. Selected artwork from those featured in the display will proceed to the regional level and winners from there will be sent to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s headquarters in Atlanta for judging at the national level. Winners at the national level will have their artwork showcased at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Conference in May 2009.

Once a week an instructor from the Tacoma Art Museum visits five different local Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound. This unique partnership has been going on for the past 14 years and includes field trips to the Art Museum so Club members can gain knowledge about art concepts, vocabulary, and techniques. Curriculum is developed by an Artist Instructor and Tacoma Art Museum’s Community Program Coordinator to provide quality learning opportunities and support in school learning requirements to teach new methods for students to express ideas. The program serves an average of 250 youth and families each year. We invite everyone to come out and experience the amazing artwork our Club members have created!
