Public Works & Utilities has received a Washington Asphalt Paving Association first place quality award for its 2007 asphalt overlays project, marking the seventh time since 1963 that Pierce County has received a WAPA award.
The asphalt overlays were applied to more than 11 miles of county roads at six locations, including 44 intersections, and used 32,000 tons of asphalt. The locations included Orville Road East, Orting-Kapowsin Highway East, Woodland Avenue East, Portland Avenue East, Steilacoom-Dupont Road and 22nd Avenue East.
The WAPA annual conference and awards ceremony was held Nov. 21 in Spokane. Receiving the western Washington award on behalf of the county was Field Engineering Manager Jerry Bryant, who was joined by Dirk Smith and Todd Obermire of paving contractor Woodworth & Company.
