The Lakewood Playhouse has galvanized local merchants into providing an enjoyable evening of theatre mixed with pre-Christmas treats to a group of families who Have had little chance of availing themselves of a theatrical experience.
Marcus Walker, Managing Artistic Director of the Lakewood Playhouse, asked Lynn Geyer if she would again coordinate the theatre’s “Christmas Stocking” event which has been so successful the past five years; she willingly agreed.
Walker was pleased that Geyer would again invite 15 families to attend the theatre’s “preview” night dress rehearsal for which the Playhouse will provide free tickets for the holiday show, A Christmas Carol. He also agreed to furnish the family members with some free intermission treats.
“This has become an annual event for Lakewood Playhouse,” Walker said.
Geyer contacted Kevin Brooks, the principal at Dower Elementary for help. Brooks selected 15 Lakewood children and their families.
The next step was finding donations from local merchants to fill the Christmas stockings each family will be given at the December 4 performance.
“We have had an overwhelming response to our requests the past five years,” said Geyer. “Considering the state of the economy, this year has been just as remarkable. We asked for products or gift certificate from each store to include in the stockings and goodie bags. The list of donors is astounding: A & A Meats, Albertson’s, Arby’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Casa Mia, Cascade Bagel, Domino’s, Garlic Jim, The Goodwill, Happy Teriyaki, The House of Donuts, Hunan Garden, I Hop, Jack-in-the Box, Kentucky Fried Chicken, KOTO Teriyaki, La Palma, Little Caesar‚Äôs, Long Beach Caf?©, Moonrise Caf?©, Old Country Buffet, Panda Express, Panera Bread, Papa John’s, QFC, Rite Aid, Saar’s Market Place, Safeway, Subway, Sunny Teriyaki, Taco Del Mar, Target, Tijuana Taco, Walgreen’s and Wendy’s.”
Geyer finalized the coordination by printing theatre and treat tickets to go with the vouchers for the Christmas stockings and goodie bags. These she put together with a welcome letter of explanation to give to Brooks who disseminated them through the children of the selected families.
A community effort guaranteed to give 15 families a chance to have a truly memorable Pre-Christmas experience.
