Daytime range demolitions at Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis, WA — South Sound residents can expect to hear some additional detonations at Fort Lewis this week, as the post continues work to make its training areas safer for use.

Fort Lewis is conducting cleanup of unexploded ordnance on the artillery impact areas this week. The purpose of this cleanup is to dispose of munitions that were fired but did not explode upon reaching the impact area.

Although access to impact areas is restricted, disposal of unexploded (“dud”) rounds is necessary to permit the continued safe use of the ranges, and for the safety of range personnel who must periodically access those areas.

Demolition is scheduled to continue through Friday, with the majority of detonations taking place between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. All work will take place during daytime hours.

Cloud cover and other atmospheric conditions on Wednesday may have increased the blast noise experienced in the surrounding community, by allowing sound to travel farther than normal and to be experienced at a higher volume than usual in neighborhoods located closer to the post. Post officials will continue looking for ways to mitigate the noise effects of this important work.

Queries or comments about noise may be directed to the I Corps Public Affairs Office’s External Communication Division hot line at (253) 967-0852, daily.
