Tacoma Narrows Rotary is helping Tacoma Area Youth for Christ (TYFC) make their Tillicum Youth and Family Center a reality. The 42-member club serving University Place and Fircrest, recently presented a $50,000 check to the local group for their Tillicum project.
TYFC has raised $435,000 toward completion of the badly needed center which will serve up to 100 area kids ages 12-18, said TYFC Executive Director Bobby Arkills. He noted that remodel of the former Wander Inn Tavern will be under way in November.
Funds from Tacoma Narrows Rotary were raised during the club’s annual “Spring for the Kids” auction, held May 2008 in Tacoma. “The Tacoma Narrows funds will be used to purchase computers, wireless internet, software and infrastructure for the new computer lab,” Arkills said. “This will be a great facility for kids who need to improve their skills, do homework and learn how to manage money.”
“Tacoma Youth for Christ is very excited about this partnership with Tacoma Narrows Rotary and the significant investment the club has made to build the new computer lab. Tacoma Narrows has set an example for other service clubs and civic groups showing how to make a big impact in the community,” Arkills noted.
Club President Robert Rummel said Tacoma Narrows supports student scholarships at Curtis High School and Tacoma Community College, funds international projects like wells for clean water, and supports many other local initiatives including dictionaries and other books for local school children.
