What does Veterans Day mean?

Pict1652.1 That question was posed by LTC John G. Voorhees, Jr., who spoke at Steilacoom High School’s Veterans Day Program on Nov. 7. November 11 is more than just a day off from school, Voorhees told his listeners. It’s a day to remember all who fought for, and died, for the freedoms we enjoy. The significance of Nov. 11, he reminded, was to commemorate Armistice Day 1918, the day on which WW I ended.

Voorhees’ was one of several speakers at the early morning assembly at the school that included music by combined SHS and Saltar’s Point Elementary School choirs and the SHS band. The U.S. and state flags were presented by a Color Guard from Ft. Lewis

Besides a photo show in honor of all who have served in the Military–past and present–the program included presentation of a framed U.S. flag that had once flown over the U. S. capitol before being sent to Steilacoom. The flag has since been framed and will be displayed in the SHS Commons.
