McCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, WA — More than 100 Airmen from McChord’s 4th Airlift Squadron will be greeted here by their family, friends and local community members Wednesday morning after a 120-day deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
The 4th AS Airmen deployed as the 817th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron to various locations throughout Europe, Southwest Asia and the Middle East.
One of many missions the deployed squadron flew included aiding in the redeployment of approximately 2,000 Georgian troops from Iraq to Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, after the Georgian government asked the United States for assistance.
“Our nation, our community and this combat airlift wing are proud of the Airmen from the 4th Airlift Squadron and its many contributions to the war effort,” said Col. Jeffrey Stephenson, 62nd Airlift Wing commander. “We welcome them home with open arms and are grateful each member has safely returned to their family and friends.”
McChord’s four active duty flying squadrons share responsibility for the deployed squadron on a rotational basis. The 8th AS deployed in late October to replace the returning 4th Airlift Squadron. The 817th EAS, headquartered at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, is responsible for scheduling, planning and executing C-17 missions into the U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility including Afghanistan and Iraq.
