Sandy Crust, a third grade teacher at Hillside, poses with Taylar, who she saved from choking.
Sandy Crust, a third grade teacher at Clover Park School District’s Hillside Elementary School on Fort Lewis, knew something was wrong when one of her students stood up red-faced and trying to cough. Nine-year-old Taylar was choking on a piece of hard candy. Crust rushed across the room, turned Taylar away from the class, and started performing the Heimlich maneuver.
“It took three tries before the candy came up,” said Crust. “The emotions didn’t really hit me until after the whole thing was over. Everyone was very scared, but my students behaved very well—sitting quietly in their seats until things settled down.”
Both Taylar and her parents are very grateful that Crust knew what to do in to help Taylar.Print This Post
