James Harold Farland
Jim was born on February 13, 1924 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Jacob and Florence Farland, and was the eldest of their three boys.
In 1938, the family moved to Washington and then later to Tacoma where Jim attended school until his junior year at Lincoln High School. The family then moved to Vancouver, Washington where Jim graduated from Vancouver High School in 1942.
Jim enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was stationed for next 8 years in Europe and Africa. His last assignment was at McChord AFB in Tacoma, Washington where he retired from the Air Force in 1963. Jim worked as a machinist in Tacoma until 1989.
Jim was a generous man. You could always count on a friendly smile, something to eat and a drink whenever you visited. Everyone looked forward to his annual, Deschutes River 4th of July Party, which he held for over 40 years.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brothers Jake and Vern, and recently, his wife of 52 years, Shirley Ray Farland (Fry).
He is survived by his three children, Richard Dean Farland (and wife, Nancy) of Vancouver, daughter Joan Marie Blanchard (and husband, Mark) of Lakewood, and son James Mark Farland of Spanaway. Jim has 4 grandsons, Aaron and Robert Farland and Nathan and Thomas Blanchard as well as 12 nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be possible on Friday, October 31 from 1-7 pm at Fir Lane Memorial Park located at 924 East 176th Street in Spanaway, Washington.
A funeral service will be held at the Fir Lane Chapel, Saturday, November 1 at 11:00 AM.
