Millions of dollars of investment in our establishments, the employment of some 600 people, and millions of dollars paid in taxes to Lakewood hardly make Card Rooms “outside interests” in the vote on Proposition 1. Quite to the contrary. We are the primary stakeholders in this election, because we–along with the City of Lakewood–stand to lose the most.
Mr. Anderson and his Save Lakewood organization lose nothing. The fact is, no one gains anything from Proposition 1. As Mr. Anderson recognized himself in a letter to The News Tribune back when his signature drive appeared to be failing, “Prop 1 is a dangerous, ill-conceived idea that has serious unintended consequences”. Mr. Anderson has brought this proposition to the public knowing the consequences with no remedy to the funding issues.
Let us add that the Vote No on Prop 1 campaign does not in any way condone the removal of signs. We ourselves have lost over 150 signs in various neighborhoods and have not complained, because that sort of activity seems to be a perennial side product of political campaigns.
