Initiative 1029 “Safe Quality for Senior” better known as the “Training Initiative” will be on the November ballot. It mandates new training requirements, a new level of background checks, and certification. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
DON’T BE FOOLED. In reality, I-1029 will harm those caring for the elderly and disabled. It will raise the costs of elder care. It will reduce the pool of qualified caregivers and impose unnecessary, burdensome, and expensive new regulations. Our caregivers are already screened with State-required background checks, and they are well-trained and supervised. I-1029 will do nothing to improve the quality of care but will cost families plenty.
I-1029 will, however, benefit one of the largest labor unions in the country: the SEIU. The SEIU is the prime sponsor and financial backer of this initiative.
With the nation facing a financial crisis and a time of a projected $3.2 billion state budget shortfall, I-1029 would create a new state bureaucracy at a cost of AT LEAST $74 million a year. The Washington State Legislature considered the SEIU proposals last legislative session and overwhelmingly rejected them as being unnecessary, burdensome, and too expensive.
Heartwarming Care and hundreds of other home care agencies, assisted living communities, adult family homes, and individuals working with vulnerable adults strongly urge you to reject I-1029 by voting NO this November. PASS IT ON!!!
