Memorial ceremony for Fort Lewis Soldier

FORT LEWIS, WA — Family, friends, Soldiers and the Fort Lewis community will remember Private First Class Leonard J. Gulczynski, in a memorial ceremony to be held Wednesday, October 1 at 3:30 p.m. in the Main Post Chapel.

According to the Department of Defense, Gulczynski, 19, of Carol Stream, Illinois, died Sept. 17 in Iraq, of wounds sustained when his military vehicle was involved in a vehicle incident.

Gulczynski was assigned to the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade. The company deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March, 2008.

According to unit records, Gulczynski initially entered military service on June 7, 2007. After completing advanced individual training in his military occupational specialty of 21E: Heavy Construction Equipment Operator at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he reported to Fort Lewis on November 21, 2007. Gulczynski was assigned to the 610th Engineer Support Co., and deployed with the unit to Iraq in March, 2008.
