Let me be clear. I don’t work at a casino. I don’t go to casinos. Honestly, I don’t care about casinos. What I care about, and the reason I am opposing the ban on casinos in Lakewood, are my Neighborhood Police Officers, Officers Porche and Wagner, who will lose their jobs if this ban is passed.
This past Monday Lakewood unveiled their ‘Plan B’ Budget with the projected loss of $2.8 Million if the anti-casino measure passes, and it’s absolutely horrible. 11 police officers fired. Losing the Assistant City Attorney and the Victim Support personnel. Slashing the Court Operations staff. All this from a measure aimed at ‘Reducing Crime’. Plus there’s the fact that the Human Services Budget is effectively eliminated (91.5% gone) along with most community and parks programs, getting rid of the very things our community needs to keep kids from becoming delinquents in the first place.
Gamblers will gamble, if not here then 5 minutes down I-5 at the Emerald Queen which isn’t going anywhere. I don’t care about casinos, but I care about my city, and the loss of these people, these officers and these programs will hurt my city and my neighbors in ways I hope we’ll never know. Don’t let this measure pass.
