Lakewood Rotary is currently looking for applicants for the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program. It is open to students born between August 16, 1991 and August 15, 1993. Students would depart in August, 2009, and return in July, 2010. Rotary’s exchange program is the best: students are screened carefully, and supervised by the Rotary Club in the destination country. Students are given an allowance, along with placement in 3 to 4 homes (room and board included). Expenses to the student: airfare, travel to interviews (Victoria), travel documents, health insurance, blazer, travel in-country, camera, etc. These expenses can run from $5,000 to $12,000. But students would also save on car insurance, food and living expenses, etc. for the year they are gone ($3,000 to $6,000/year, estimate).
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, with about 30 countries participating. Students can request their top choice of countries, but no guarantees are offered for a specific country.
Also available is a one month student-to-student exchange in the summer. A student from here visits a family in a country in central Europe, and the student in that family then visits the American family for a month.
Applications are due by October 1. Local interviews commence shortly thereafter. Please contact your school counselor for more information, or call Greg Rediske at 253-582-4687 (evenings) or 253-581-2332 (daytime).Print This Post
