The Champions Mentoring Program aims to match children in grades 4-8 with a trained mentor to help them succeed in school and in life.
“1:1 mentoring is a time-proven strategy that helps young people of all circumstances achieve their potential.” (Elements of Effective Practice ‚Äì MENTOR National Mentoring Partnership).
Working in close partnership with the Clover Park School District, Communities In Schools of Lakewood (CISL) established the Champions Mentor Program in 2006. CISL currently has 27 mentors meeting with students at Lochburn, Mann, and Woodbrook Middle Schools; Tillicum, Tyee Park and John Dower Elementary Schools; Clover Park High School and Harrison Preparatory Academy. We need 23 more mentors to start in October in order to match all the students who need mentors in these schools.
Mentors are “Champions for Children” who provide 1:1 encouragement, guidance and academic incentive. Mentors and mentees meet 45 minutes to an hour, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. through the school year, to build trust and work on school and personal goals. Each mentor-child relationship is different depending on the child’s needs and the interests of the mentor and student. The common factor is the focus on building a caring relationship to improve the student’s well-being and success in school. Studies on Mentoring show consistent improvement in students’ grades, classroom behavior, and attendance. Mentors make a difference!
Anyone with patience and a genuine concern for children and teens can become a Mentor. Mentors are a diverse group ranging from retired community members to business executives, bus drivers, young adults, anyone while is willing to put the time into being trained and being available. Trainings will be held at the CISL Office, 6402 100th St. SW, Sept. 19 or Oct. 2, at 12:30- p.m. Application forms can be downloaded from our website at www.lakewood.ciswa.org.
