The line backed up onto the field early at Lochburn Middle School. Some families had spent the night. The doors opened at 8:30 A.M a half an hour before schedule and the fair began! (For more photos, click here.)
In the cafeteria there were school supplies, socks, underwear, backpacks, hygiene products, toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss. New toys were given out by Ken Stockten our special clown.
In the gym 830 bags of used clothing, which had been process and sorted throughout the year, were placed around on tables along with 520 pairs of used shoes.
The 500 hall was buzzing with activity. The wonderful staff and students from Clover Park Technical College managed to do 111 hair cuts. The professional team of Dr. Dale Hirz and company provided 73 free sports physicals and the Lakewood First Lions screened 48 kids for vision and hearing.
Franciscan Health served 23 kids with 70 immunizations. Our Lakewood Fire Department fitted 100 kids with bike helmets. The Life Safety funds paid for 50, individual firemen at the fair saw the need and personally purchased 40 more and 20 families paid the $6.00 price tag.
Outside Nancy Alleman headed up a team of hygienist, along with the tooth fairy, and managed to do 314 dental screenings. A lunch of hot dogs, chips, fruit chewies, cookies and juice was served by volunteers and provided by Communities in Schools. Used toys and books were set out on tarps and tables for all the kids to take home. Vendors lined the sidewalk to share important information with the families. A special thank you to the City of Lakewood for the grant awarded to support the Ready to Learn Fair.
The fair was held to help families in need. It takes the whole year to collect and process the clothing and toys. Unfortunately we were only able to give one backpack per family and there was a limited quantity of underwear available.
