The much-anticipated grand opening of Pioneer Middle School at DuPont/Northwest Landing is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20. The official back-to-school day for students, both at Pioneer, and throughout the Steilacoom District, is Thursday, Aug. 28. The new middle school building is located at 1750 Bob’s Hollow Lane.
Sept. 20 is the date that’s been selected for the official community opening ceremony: ribbon cutting, flag raising, classroom and technology tours, entertainment, refreshments, etc., according to Pioneer Principal Kristi Webster.
“Join us that afternoon and help us begin the new school year,” Webster added.
“It’s been a long time coming, but the new building is sure to be a hit with students, teachers, parents and the community at large,” said Webster.
There are so many things to see‚Äîfrom gardens (two of them) to the cool “tree-house” effect in the second floor library. The new building contains 106,000 sq. ft. of space, divided among 6th, 7th and 8th -grade wings, office space, food services and in-door athletic facilities. Cost for the new educational facility is $34.6 million.
Then there’s the athletic field with plenty of space for baseball, track and football‚Äîand enough locker storage space for every student. Although Aug. 28 is the day that the 2008-09 school year officially begins, the public celebration won’t take place for another month.
“The welcome mat will be out. Please help us celebrate another milestone occasion in Steilacoom Historical School District No. 1 on Sept. 20,” Ms. Webster encourages.
