LASA and Crossover Christian Center are organizing a fund raising/awareness walk. The walk on Saturday August 2nd starts at 10 AM. Participants will walk mile long laps around Waughop Lake at Ft Steilacoom.
Organizer, Pastor Frederick Brown, says “the walk is to raise community awareness and funds for the Lakewood Area Shelter Association and is a way for us to give back to the community”. LASA Board member and instructor at CPTC, Kathy Hathaway, agreed saying, “Assisting LASA in supporting our neighbors is one of the best ways that you as an individual can make a difference in decreasing hunger and homelessness in Greater Pierce County”.
In the past the walk has drawn the support of the public and organizations such as the Buffalo Soldiers. The Buffalo Soldiers is a local group of men and women celebrating the military service of their fore fathers. They encourage everyone to come and celebrate the work of LASA.
Last year LASA served over 679 households through their Outreach program. This program is designed to prevent homelessness by providing help with utilities, rental assistance and other emergency needs.
LASA’s housing programs served over 50 families. Service includes providing a single family furnished home with utilities and case management. Their goal is to help families develop the skills they need to secure and keep permanent housing.
LASA has been serving the community for 20 years as of 2009. This is the community’s chance to “Step Up and Support LASA”. Registration is $20 and includes a t-shirt and if you don’t feel like walking, donations are appreciated!
