Dear DuPont Residents:
You should have received a post card from the City announcing a very important town hall meeting on July 24th. The event will be held at Chloe Clark Elementary at 7 pm.
Information on our current and future fire services together with an explanation of their impact upon our city’s operating budgets should be presented. (The estimate expenditures for 2008 and 2009 operating budgets are provided for your analysis.)
Council members are considering a request to refer an increase in property taxes (a levy lift) designated for fire services as a means to balance the entire 2009 operating budget. A $2.17 fire levy assessment per $1,000 of property value is being discussed. A $300,000 home would have an annual fire levy of $651 in addition to the regular levy.
A final decision on recommending a levy lift and its amount will be made at the July 29th City Council meeting.
I strongly suggest that all stakeholders and taxpayers attend both of these meetings. Your participation and responses to the needs of DuPont and the financial support to provide them must be considered by your elected representatives. The final decision on the property tax increase will be yours. The ultimate decision will be by a vote of our citizens on the November general election ballot.
ROGER C. WESTMAN
DuPont City Councilmember, Position 1
