The Lakewood Area Shelter Association (LASA) and Crossover Christian Center are organizing a fund raising/awareness walk. The walk, taking place on Saturday August 2nd will start at 10 AM. Participants will walk mile long laps around Waughop Lake at Ft Steilacoom.
Organizer, Pastor Frederick Brown, says “We support the work of LASA and organizing the walk was one way for us to give back to our community.” LASA board member Margaret Kraft agreed saying ‚Äúthe need in the community is growing due to the slump in the economy. When I help at the mobile food bank in the Springbrook area in Lakewood the numbers of people in need are growing. We are seeing more people in need of basic necessities.‚Äù
In the past the walk has drawn the support of the public and organizations such as the Buffalo Soldiers, but everyone is invited to come and participate. Registration is $20 and includes a t-shirt.
Last year LASA served over 679 households through their Outreach program. This program is designed to prevent homelessness by providing help with utilities, rental assistance and other emergency needs.
LASA’s housing programs served over 50 families. Service includes providing a single family furnished home with utilities and case management. The purpose of case
management is to help families develop the skills they need to secure and keep permanent housing.
