The American Lake Park Boat Launch is still closed for construction. Although you haven‚Äôt seen much activity on site there has been a lot of work happening behind the scenes. The four new floats are built and the concrete is curing. The piles are ready to be driven. The old piles will be removed when the new piles are installed. The City has permits and contractors are working on the bulkhead repairs. Once bulkhead work is complete new gangways, piles and floats will be installed. The City hopes to temporarily open the site late July — August and then close it in September to complete the final grading, paving, storm water improvements, landscaping, etc‚Ķ Look on the City‚Äôs website (www.cityoflakewood.us) for updates and a temporary launch schedule. We plan to let people launch for free to make up for the inconvenience.
The reason for the delays is that the project was bid last spring and the cost to do the entire project exceeded the budget. The City divided the project into several phases to reduce the cost. The disadvantage is that it takes longer to package specifications, obtain bids, secure contracts, insurance and bonds for each phased part of the project.
The City appreciates the patience of boaters while this project is completed; the new launch site will be worth the wait.
Until the site is re-opened, the City recommends boaters use the State Fish and Wildlife‚Äôs boat launch facility in Tillicum (near Camp Murray). This site does require a “vehicle use permit” that can be obtained online: fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wdfw/vup.html.Print This Post
