Zachary Sheats, a 16-year-old junior from Clover Park High School, is the state winner of the 2008 Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) competition. Sheats will represent Washington state at the national competition in Orlando, Fla. June 19-21.
“It’s really cool to be selected as the state winner,” said Sheats. “I have always really liked science and I am naturally good at it.”
Sheats’ science project-the Nisqually Project: Surviving Questionable Water-first received attention at the Pacific Lutheran University Regional Science Fair earlier this year.
The national winner will move on to the international competition in Stockholm, Sweden. He or she will also receive a $3,000 and his or her school will receive $1,000 to enhance science education and research in the classroom.
