Steilacoom High School‚Äôs gym has rarely looked fancier: Enormous urns arranged with red, orange, yellow and white flowers–the school‚Äôs colors–lanked the podium, while parents, students, faculty and community members filled the chairs on Thursday evening, June 5, for the school‚Äôs annual Senior Awards Ceremony.
The announcement of the Salutatorian and Valedictorians for the June 7 graduation was a highlight of the program. This year‚Äôs honorees include Lauren Boyle, Salutatorian; and Salutatorians Jack Phillips, Gretchen Burkhart and Caroline Tsoi,
By evening‚Äôs end a total of $872,589 worth of scholarships had been awarded to a group of 58 students. There are 147 students in the Class of 2008. Graduation was held June 7 at PLU‚Äôs Olson Auditorium.
In addition to the variety of college scholarships, SHS awards such as the Michael Van Wert Memorial AP Awards, Spirit of Community Volunteer Award, Principals Scholars Awards, as well as individual department awards were presented. Awards also were presented by local civic organizations such as the Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation, Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis of Steilacoom and Rotary Club of Lakewood.
Individual family awards from the community included the Bair Family Scholarship, the O‚ÄôGrady Family Scholarship, Gloria Martinson Creger Memorial Scholarship, the John Anderson Scholarship, David Sellars Memorial Scholarship, Anna and Fred Ziegler Scholarship, the Lucas Family Scholarship, the Tom White Memorial Scholarship, the Evanson Family PLU Scholarships and others that were presented to soon-to-be-graduates.
