FORT LEWIS, Wash. — Fort Lewis will honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the United States with two Memorial Day observance ceremonies.
On Thursday, May 22 at 11 a.m., the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, will conduct a wreath laying ceremony at the Arrowhead Brigade Memorial which was unveiled near the brigade headquarters in February. The memorial honors Arrowhead Brigade soldiers who have fallen since the brigade’s inception. The brigade will conduct this ceremony on Thursday – prior to the Memorial Day weekend – so the brigade’s Soldier may be present. 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2ID, returned from 15 months in Iraq in September 2007.
On Monday, May 26 at 11:30 a.m., 1st Corps and Fort Lewis will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at the Fort Lewis Cemetery. Brig. Gen. Jeff Mathis, deputy commanding general, 1st Corps and Fort Lewis, will be the guest speaker. The 1st Corps Band will provide the music. During the ceremony a wreath will be laid on the post’s marker honoring all unknown American Soldiers who have died for their country, followed by a 21-gun salute to honor fallen comrades and the playing of Taps.
