To cut costs, 11 workers will be laid off, four will backfill vacant positions and another 15 open positions will remain unfilled. In addition, the Children’s Dental Clinic, which has been in operation since 1998 in downtown Tacoma, will be closed. Dental services will still be offered at the Family Dental Clinic, in the same downtown neighborhood, and the Lakewood Dental Clinic.
A combination of flat revenues and rapidly increasing operational costs is forcing the organization to take action to overcome recent financial deficits and rebuild a balanced budget by the beginning of the new fiscal year in June 1.
Community Health operates nine medical and three dental clinics in Pierce County and has been serving the needs of low-income and uninsured patients since 1969, when the first clinics were opened by volunteer doctors. It now has 396 workers.
