The American Lake Boat Launch Improvement Project is being completed in phases. The project was bid last year and project costs came in significantly higher than the City had budgeted. The City divided the project into several phases to reduce the cost. The disadvantage is that it takes longer to package specifications, obtain bids, secure contracts, insurance, and bonds for each phased part of the project. The City is proceeding as fast as possible with available resources.
The first phase, the actual boat launch unit, is completed. The second phase involves the docks, piles and bulkhead repair. Shoreside Marina is under contract and they are building the floats to be delivered and installed in May. Another phase involves the removal of the house, business office and hanger. The structures required asbestos abatement before demolition could commence. The asbestos has been removed and the demolition should occur in April. The improvements to the parking lot, storm water retention, staging lanes, site landscaping, lighting and new entry will start after the demolition is completed.
Until the site is re-opened, the City recommends boaters use the State Fish and Wildlife’s boat launch facility in Tillicum (near Camp Murray). This site does require a “vehicle use permit” that can be obtained online.
