LAKEWOOD, WA — Two Pierce College Fort Steilacoom students will be honored as members of the 2008 All-Washington Academic Team at noon March 20 at South Puget Sound Community College. The ceremony recognizes top scholars from community and technical colleges from all over the state with scholarship prizes.
This year, the team members representing Pierce College Fort Steilacoom are Diane Drapac and Judith Jones.
After her husband was injured, Diane Drapac, 47, of Spanaway, discovered that her experience handling the accounting for their two businesses was not enough to get her the job she needed to support her family. Diane decided to go back to school and began taking business classes at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, where she now holds a work-study position as a student retention assistant and peer mentor. Diane has a 3.9 grade point average and she plans to become a financial planner. She has four children and is very active with her church and in the community.
Judith Jones, 53, also of Spanaway, became a student at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom following an intensive career transition program for displaced homemakers. She has since flourished, earning a 4.0 GPA and majoring in education and natural science. Judith now serves in student government as a campus affairs senator and works as a community safety program coordinator for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. Judith’s ultimate goal is to become a teacher of geography and natural science.
Simply for being included on the All-Washington Academic Team, Diane and Judith will each receive a $750 scholarship from the Northwest Education Loan Association and Key Bank. They are eligible for an additional $1,000 scholarship from the Trustees Association for Community and Technical Colleges if they are ranked in the top three among all 54 team members.
Also, both Diane and Judith, by virtue of their inclusion on the state team, are now nominated for the 2008 All-USA Academic Team. Officials from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, will make the official All-USA team announcements on April 7.
