When large groups of people are temporarily displaced from their homes in a disaster situation, it may be necessary to effectively and sensitively manage their needs in an emergency shelter. Over the past year, the City of Lakewood has been committed to the development of an emergency sheltering program and is currently seeking volunteers willing to be trained to serve their community in a crisis.
Sites throughout the City will be used to support those needing shelter and their companion pets, however, city staff and other social service agencies will not be available to operate the sites on their own. Trained volunteers with a variety of skills will be needed and called into action. Since shelter sites may accommodate a variety of people with diverse needs, the following skills will be needed: medical personnel, animal care specialists, food preparation, site set up and clean up, activity coordinators, ham radio operators, those fluent in foreign languages and various office skills. If you are willing to volunteer please let us know. The City will provide training and support as needed. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.
