My congratulations to Pierce County Councilmember, Calvin Goings for leading the effort to demand that the State of Washington let local governments, like the County Council, determine where sex offenders can or cannot live. The State should note that both Republicans and Democrats on the County Council unanimously agreed to support Councilmember Goings’ common sense, public safety proposal.
The City of Tacoma and Pierce County have historically been a ‚Äúdumping ground‚Äù for convicted criminals of all kinds. I am pleased that the County Council is finally on record as saying, “enough is enough.” Personally, I find sex offenders as the most troubling and disturbing of criminals living in our neighborhoods. If the State is unwilling to set statewide standards for residency rules for these offenders, then the State should just step aside and let local level city and county councils make these critical public safety decisions.
