Once again, The Lakewood Playhouse has galvanized local merchants into providing an enjoyable evening of theatre mixed with pre-Christmas treats to a group of families who had little chance of availing themselves of a theatrical experience.
This year Marcus Walker, Managing Artistic Director of the Lakewood Playhouse, asked Lynn Geyer if she would repeat the past five year’s successful evening where the theatre provides free tickets for the upcoming show, The Sound of Music, she answered with a resounding, “Yes.”
Walker concurred he wanted again to open the theatre’s December 6 “preview” night dress rehearsal to novice theatre-goers. “This year marks the sixth time Lynn has done her annual event for Lakewood Playhouse,” Walker said.
Walker told Geyer to invite 15 families again this year. He also agreed to furnish the 75 family members with some free intermission treats.
This year, Geyer selected Tyee Park Elementary. She contacted Jesus Villegas, the Community Coordinator at the school for help. Villegas selected 15 Tyee Park school children and their families.
The next step was obtaining donations from local merchants to fill the Christmas stockings each family will be given at the December 6 performance.
“We have had an overwhelming response to our requests the past five years,” said Geyer. “This year has been even more remarkable. We asked for products or gift certificate from each store to include in the stockings. The list of donors is astounding: A & A Meats, Albertson’s, Arby’s, Baskin-Robbins, Bed Bath and Beyond, Blimpies, Cascade Bagel, Casa Mia, Church’s Chicken, Cold Stone Creamery, Cookies by Design, Denny’s, Garlic Jim, The Goodwill, Happy Teriyaki, The House of Donuts, Hunan Garden, I Hop, Jack-in-the Box, K-Mart, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Koto Teriyaki, L & L Hawaiian Barbeque, La Palma, The Long Beach Caf?©, McDonald’s, Moonrise Caf?©, Old Country Buffet, Panda Express, Panera Bread, Papa John, Pizza Hut, QFC, The Ram, Rite Aid, Saar’s Market Place, Safeway, Subway, Sunny Teriyaki, Taco Del Mar, Target, Tijuana Taco, Walgreen’s and Wendy’s.”
Geyer finalized the coordination by printing theatre and treat tickets to go with the vouchers for the Christmas stockings. These she put together with a welcome letter of explanation to give to Villegas who will disseminate them through the children of the selected families.
A community effort guaranteed to give 15 families a chance to have a truly memorable Pre-Christmas experience.
