Deanne Robinson (standing in center) explains how she and her husband Wayne acquired and restored Thornewood Castle in Tillicum.
When Wayne and Deanna Robinson acquired the historic Thornewood Castle in Tillicum eight years ago it was a disaster, Mrs. Robinson explained to members of the Lakewood Historical Society when they toured the facility Tuesday evening.
Today it has been restored to its near-original elegance and is operated as a Bed & Braekfast as well as home for the couple.
Built on the southern end of American Lake by Chester Thorne for his new bride, the huge facility was dismantled in Europe and rebuilt on site at the lake. Unfortunately, the building went into disrepair in the late 1980s and continued going downhill until the Robinsons fell in love with it and acquired it.
Several years ago, the building was selected by Disney Corp. to be the scene for a made for TV movie. As part of the agreement to use the house, Disney agreed to restore much of the interior and gardens to their former beauty.
With that much accomplished, the Robinsons continued the upgrading and converted the upper two floors into bedrooms for the bed and breakfast establishment. The entire castle is filled with period pieces collected by Mrs. Robinson over the years.
She explained to the historical society members a great deal of the history of the building and explained how she is working at digging out historical details of the castle.
