Steilacoom High School’s Choir performed a musical sendoff during a recent Ft. Lewis deployment ceremony.
One hundred thirty men and women of the 551st Medical Company, the 673rd Medical Company Dental Services and the 153rd Medical Detachment Blood Support were recently serenaded by 30 members of SHS’s Pinnacle Choir, directed by Rachael Welde (wife of 551st Medical Company Commander Marc Welde).
The choir sang a medley of patriotic songs in addition to the National Anthem, the 1st Corps and the Army song as part of the Oct. 19 deployment send-off program.
The music was well received, said Welde. One soldier who’d been deployed three previous times was overheard to have remarked, “no one ever sang for any of my deployments.”
Although it’s not a common practice to provide music on such occasions, Welde said she’d be happy to have the choir participate at any future deployment ceremony if anyone asked.
“Our students felt proud to take part in the program,” she added.
