There are times in our lives when we must put our own needs aside and help those around us. In our community we have a family that, through no fault of their own, has been devastated by illness and the ensuing debt the illness has caused. These are not irresponsible people. Conversely, they have paid their bills, protected their credit, and stayed off welfare. Ironically, when they have needed help at some of their worst times, our social system has turned them down, because they are home owners and John has a full-time job. Their medical bills often exceed their income and though they live very sparsely and pay their bills they have been unable to maintain their home. The very small home is beyond repair. The foundation is failing, the roof is collapsing, the sewer pipes are backing up and there is no central heating.
This family has done an incredible job of sustaining themselves with their multiple overwhelming problems. Mary has fought back against all physical odds and with John’s loving help is a testament to his very dedicated and constant commitment to her and his family.
There is a group of community members who have watched this struggle and could no longer stand by without stepping up to do something. We have formed a foundation to build this family a home with the community’s help. We already have a great start, but we continue to need your support. Lakewood Fire is going to do a controlled burn. Lemay Inc. is going to haul all the debris away. We have persons in place to prepare the site and pour the foundation. Korsmo Construction is our General Contractor. House plans and permits have been submitted to the city of Lakewood. OrePac is donating the inside doors and interior trim. Classy Chassis is working with Christian youth groups to raise money through the sale of car wash and detail cards. We have a website designed by a graphic designer. We have a place for the family to stay until their home is finished. All of this is volunteered by a generous community. As I said, we have a great start.
My appeal to you is that you open your hearts to this family with a donation of goods, services or money. We can use people that can paint and hammer or plant a shrub. We are Lakewood’s Extreme Makeover. There is an account set up at the Lakewood Washington Mutual in the name of the Haas Family Building Fund, but donations can be made at ANY WaMU branch. All donations are tax deductible. To donate materials or services please contact Shelley McCombs at 253-984-0853 or Denise Davidson at 253-677-6979. Please visit our website at www.maryhaasfoundation.org.
From our hearts, we thank you.
