The City of Lakewood Youth Council will be coordinating projects for Make a Difference Day in Lakewood which will occur on Saturday, October 27, 2007.
The day will begin with a kick-off event and a short welcoming speech by Mayor Claudia Thomas at the Clover Park High School Performing Arts Center at 8:30am. There will be four different project sites this year and they include: Fort Steilacoom Park, Custer Elementary, the Flett Creek blueberry farm or they can remain at Clover Park High School. Participation in this event qualifies for community service hours that are now required in the Clover Park School District.
There will be three different projects at Fort Steilacoom Park including invasive plant removal, a beautification of the entrance area and replacing markers in the cemetery. Custer Elementary will be the site for sorting and organizing clothes that have been donated to Caring for Kids. At the Flett Creek blueberry farm we will be chipping the pruned branches from the overgrown bushes and returning them to the pathways. For those who choose to stay at the high school, there will be a card/letter writing project to Salute our Soldiers in Iraq. The cards and letters will be for our community connector, the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division which is currently deployed in Iraq. They are not expected home until sometime next summer and this is an opportunity for children, youth and families to express their appreciation for their efforts in our nations’ security and the freedom of the Iraqi people.
